What To Do Once You Buy A Home
Hooray! You bought your dream mountain home! After all the searching and contracts, you did it! Now the fun begins. But before you kick off your shoes and relax in the clean mountain air, there’s a few things you should do.
Your First Tasks After You Buy Your Dream Mountain Home
Forward Your Mail: Go to USPS and make sure your mail is being forwarded from your old address to your new one
Change Everything to Your Name: The gas company, the water company (unless you’re on a well), the electric company, and trash services all need to be in your name with your billing information.
Change the Locks: While you may have keys in your hand, they used to be belong to someone else. We recommend removing old locks on all exterior doors and throwing away the old keys. Locks are fairly inexpensive and easy to install. Go with a lock that is connected to a security system, video cameras or just your Wifi so you always have access (or you can let someone in to water the plants). While you are at it, did the previous owner leave garage door openers, or anything else that needs to be reset?
Set your Settings: Check your new thermostats. Does it have an app you need to download so you can control it remotely? Do you need to set a new schedule to your temperature liking?
Get to Know Your House:
Find your electric breaker panel and your main house shutoff
Find the main water shut off
Do you have a well and water filter? Find out what water filter your house requires, replace and order extra so you are always ready to replace.
Locate the main gas valve and shut off
Locate your furnace. Find the filters that the furnace uses and replace with new/order extras
Do you have a septic? Find your emergency shut off button for the septic and determine when it was last cleaned (it should have been to purchase but you want to make sure!)
Big Picture Stuff: Make sure your house is prepared for winter and best protected against fire risk.
Fix-Ups: Inevitably, your house may need a little work to make it just how you want it. Here’s some recommendations on service providers in the foothills.
